Music and Drama

Achievements and performances which grow confidence and skill.

Music

Music can be heard almost every hour of the day at Clayesmore Prep so if your child has any instinct for music we will develop it! There are orchestras, choirs, jazz bands, and chamber music groups. Over 70% of pupils learn a musical instrument, and every year there will be children gaining Grade 6 and above in their music exams. Tuition is available on almost all instruments, even the bagpipes!

There are two major drama productions every year, staged in our theatre. These popular productions provide a wonderful opportunity to combine acting and music as well as introduce children to set design, make-up, lighting and sound engineering.

We strongly believe that participating in performances develops confidence in our pupils and gives them a sense of teamwork, cameraderie and shared success. Not to mention it being fun for everyone!

Prep Music

All children are given an introduction to instrumental music. In Year 3, the children can learn the recorder, in Year 4, the violin and in Year 5, the ukelele, all at no additional cost. There are regular concerts and at any time there are a considerable number of ensembles in rehearsal so that as many children as possible gain pleasure from the experience of shared music-making. There is an orchestra, a long tradition of choral music based around the chapel and regular music tours.

Altogether, it is difficult to imagine that a school could offer more breadth of opportunity for individual or group music with our prime objective being to help young people enjoy music to the full. Above all, it is ‘cool’ to be a musician at Clayesmore Prep!

Prep Drama

Two drama productions – one for the juniors and one for the senior year groups – are staged each year in our 160-seat theatre that is shared with the Senior School. These popular productions provide a wonderful opportunity to combine acting and music, as well as showcase the talents of set designers and technical crew.

They also give children the chance to get involved in the exciting process of ‘putting on a show’ in front of an audience, which helps to increase their self confidence.

LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) is a co-curricular activity which children can join. Exams are held at various stages, providing children with internationally recognised qualifications in drama.

Prep Dance

Our purpose-built Dance Studio, with its fully sprung floor, is used by many pupils every week for ballet, dance and drama lessons. Girls and boys take immense pleasure from learning all sorts of dance styles and the classes are popular among all ages.
