Dan Conway and Andrea Cheverton, Heads of Sport

Our vision is a school in which every child participates in competitive sport and learns the life-long values of physical activity for the promotion of health and well-being.

Our belief is to offer a holistic approach to sport at Clayesmore, the emphasis is on development and progression of pupils throughout the school. Whether that be in a team or individual environment.

Mission Statement

(We aim…) “Our mission is to provide regular sports teaching and coaching in a wide range of sports, games and activities in a safe and friendly environment leading to quality inter-school and intramural competition, fostering the beneficial social and moral qualities associated with participation in sport.”

“We aim to provide equality of provision regardless of gender, ethnicity, race, physical ability or standard exceeding the national recommended level of physical activity for the promotion of health and well-being and instil positive habits for life-long learning.”

The Sports Curriculum

Every year group enjoys three afternoons of sport a week in these major sports, with Years 9-11 also taking part in Core PE sessions, encouraging a positive attitude towards fitness for life.

However whilst we encourage students to play the major game of the term, we do understand that students have other passions and are able to offer alternative options to cater for everyone. These options become more available as you make your way through the year groups.

WE do offer an extensive activities programme to ensure that ALL students are able to have an opportunity to try different activities and sports to find their niche.

Sports Qualifications

Alongside this sports programme, pupils may opt to study Physical Education (PE) at GCSE and the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport in the Sixth Form

Co-Curricular Programme

Beyond the formal structured games programme, many additional sports are offered through the diverse co-curricular programme, enabling pupils to try their hands at different sports and develop new skills, delivered by skilled and enthusiastic coaching staff.

Sports Facilities

Clayesmore is very well-equipped with incredible sports facilities.

Indoor sports facilities include a 25m swimming pool, a 40m x 20m Sports Hall with 4 cricket nets, 2 squash courts, fitness room and forum area.

Outdoors, we have 25 acres of playing fields, housing cricket, rugby and football pitches together with an Astroturf pitch for hockey, football and tennis and an all-weather surface with a smaller netball court.

There are two separate blocks of painted hard tarmac courts containing three tennis courts/two netball courts each.

We also have an athletics area for the summer term.

All these facilities are available for student use in leisure time.

International Sport Tours

As well as welcoming international touring sides for competitive fixtures, overseas sports tours have long been a part of the sporting programme.

Previous tours have visited the Netherlands, India, Spain, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

There is a joint senior hockey tour planned to Barcelona in October 2019.

Coaches

We are able to offer a very experienced set of coaching staff who have played and coached at a very high level over both Boys’ and Girls’ Games programmes.

Our coaches have links to very big local clubs ensuring progression from school to Club, District and County levels but also deliver sessions to meet ALL student needs, ensuring that everyone makes progress and achieves success.
